You’ll spot them growing in our hedgerows and parkland  and they’re the perfect late-summer treat straight from nature. They’re not only delicious, but also a reminder of how special our green spaces are.

If you’re out for a walk, why not gather a handful (leaving plenty for wildlife and turn them into something comforting at home?

Here’s our simple recipe for Blackberry & Apple Crumble…

Blackberry & Apple Crumble (serves 4–6)

Ingredients

  • 300g blackberries

  • 2 medium cooking apples (e.g. Bramley), peeled, cored & chopped

  • 75g caster sugar (plus extra to taste)

  • 150g plain flour

  • 100g cold butter, cubed

  • 75g demerara sugar

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 190°C (170°C fan).

  2. Place the apples in a pan with a splash of water and 50g caster sugar. Simmer until just soft, then stir in the blackberries. Tip into a baking dish.

  3. Rub the butter into the flour with your fingertips until it looks like breadcrumbs. Stir in demerara sugar.

  4. Scatter the crumble topping over the fruit.

  5. Bake for 30–35 mins until golden and bubbling.

  6. Serve warm with custard, cream or ice cream.
